Project Preservation

Not only does each student have their own virtual layer, which they can populate and decorate as they'd like, but students can preserve their friends and friendships here too. Their layers shouldn't be completely alone and desolate. Their friends can make guest appearances. They can record intentions for their relationships, the love they feel for one another, the things they talk about. I think DIALECTICS would be so powerful in here. Project Preservation should be SocialVR! You're not just preserving memories or artwork. You're preserving the DNA of your relationships, the covalent bonds that held you together as a teenager. Your virtual layer is like your own personal diary, your own yearbook. 3D Yearbooking is another đŸ–¤Collaborations. Every year Wheeler makes a 3D Yearbook. Yearbooking is how we currently preserve Wheeler's social fabric... What about taking that to the next level? Really we should be working hand in hand with everyone who is currently preserving Wheeler's fabric: Yearbook Club, Video Broadcasting, Now & Then Writers, etc.. With SocialVR, you can preserve social fabric. Imagine creating-- for fun (one of our many templates)-- an RPG-like dialogue tree with your friends. This is what we do as humans. We tell stories of our time with each other. We say "She always used to say this" or "He always used to say this like this." Now, at your 30 year reunion-- or even when you're feeling lost during your college transition-- you can play back these memories and be nurtured by the social web that nurtured you as a teenager and child. You still have to let go, you still have to move on, but this is a nice touch. Many of us flip through our old yearbooks every couple of years or a few times a decade. Many of us think of old friends several times per year. This would just be a more robust way of doing that. It may even provide the infrastructure necessary to connect Wheeler alumni (and solve that tremendous missing link). We could work with Kelly Clifton at the Alumni Office. This could be a way for alumni to meet other alumni (they could take each other through their virtual layers as an introduction). It could be a way to connect alumni more effectively for job opportunities, internships, connections, etc.. You could meet virtually, at Wheeler, in your own permanent "private layer meeting room", just like Zoom. Wheeler is vastly underutilizing the power of its alumni network. This technology may provide enough of an incentive for alumni to connect with other alumni, especially if Wheeler advertised this.
